Grandma’s Tattoos, film on Genocide survivor, kicks up fuss in Turkey

Grandma’s Tatto, the film featuring the family story of an Armenian Genocide survivor, is said to be in the spotlight of the Turkish authorities which recently raised alarm over the French National Assembly’s bill outlawing the denial of the WWI-period massacres of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire.

The film, produced by director Suzanne Khardalian, was aired by Al-Jazeera TV between January 12 and 18. It refers to the Armenian Genocide, revealing the stories of women who experienced violence during the 1915 killings. The author makes a journey into her own family to investigate the terrible truth behind her late grandma's odd tattoos. She portrayed her grandma as a bit strange woman, never liking physical contact and covered with unusual marks.

Referring to the film, the Turkish media characterized it as a campaign, reflecting the argumens of one side.
