March 13 –great Armenian poet Yeghisge Charents’ birthday

March 13 marks the 115^th birth anniversary of Armenian poet, writer and public activist Yegishe Charents.

The great poet’s home-museum is going to host different jubilee events, inviting students, writers, intellectuals or simply lovers of Charents’ art.

A procession will head towards the poet’s memorial complex to announce the opening of the Charents year.

An exhibition of portrait series will open at the home-museum later in the day.

The jubilee events will be attended by President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan and Minister of Culture Hasmik Poghosyan.

“Read Charents!” – such was translator Samvel Mkrtchyan’s response to Tert.am’s request to reevaluate the literary heritage of one of the best 20^th century poets.

Charents wrote his first collection, Three Songs to the Sad and Pale Girl, in 1914 when he was only 16. His early works also comprised such poems as Blue-eyed Homeland" (1915) and "Dantesque Legend" (1915-16).

Upon the initiative of the Charents’ Home-Museum, translator Samvel Mkrtchyan will compile this summer a lavishly illustrated collection of his selected works in English.

Literary critic David Gasparyan is preparing a jubilee collection of Charents’ unprinted works. The edition is due to be published later this year.
