Yerevan to join European Literary Night

Twenty-three cities across Europe are joining the European Literary Night on Wednesday to hear readings from London to Paris, Kiev to Milan, and Yerevan.

The initiative is aimed at introducing the contemporary European literature to the public.
 

According to the British Council in Armenia, Yerevan is taking part in the readings for the second year.
 

Actors of the Forum theatre will gather at the Innovative Center for Contemporary Art at 7:00 pm local time to read pieces by Jaroslav Hasek (Czech Republic), Varuzhan Voskanyan (Romania) and John Tolkein (UK).
 

The Armenian audience will have a chance tomorrow to hear excerpts from Hasek’s famous novel, The Good Soldier Sveik, whose comic episodes explore the pointlessness and futility of war.
 

The Romanian literature will be introduced by the ethnic Armenian writer and publicist, Varuzhan Voskanyan, who is also a well-known political figure in the country and a former minister of economy and trade. His Book of Whispers, which tells the Romanian-Armenian community’s life and their bitter past, will be read out at the event.
 

Tolkein’s Hobbit is the next work to be introduced to the book lovers.
 

Literary Night is aimed at boosting a cross-cultural dialogue and creating a platform to introduce the European literature. It is an interesting experience of combining literary pieces with artistic mastery.
 

The event is organized jointly by the Czech Centers and the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC). It is celebrated in many countries worldwide, attracting numerous actors, writers and politicians.
