Merited singer Gohar Gasparyan will have statue sooner or later – theatrician

The artistic director of the Hakob Paronyan Musical Comedy Theatre believes that Yerevan must by all means have  a statue to merited opera singer Gohar Gasparyan.

Speaking to Tert.am, Yerevand Ghazanchyan said that no measures have been taken in this direction so far despite his persistent calls at every public meeting. Ghazancyan said that a statue to the great singer, who was also famed as Armenia’s nightingale, will sooner or later be erected as his proposals always receive a positive response.
 

“There has been no response from the top circles, and after all, people are not obliged to let me know if are starting activities. They are probably thinking of something because my statements in this connection always meet applauds in any hall,” he said.

Ghazanchyan highlighted the importance of erecting the statue, considering Gohar Gasparyan a unique figure in Armenia’s opera art.

“Our nation has had many great singers, and in all likelihood, it still has, but Gohar Gasparyan is a unique phenomenon. I do not share the idea that singers like her are born every 100 years. Gohar Gasparyan was a phenomenon beyond all kind of rules; she was a great singer,” he said.
 

Gohar Gasparyan was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1924 to a family of Armenian parents. In 1948, she migrated to Soviet Armenia along with hundreds of thousands of other Armenians from the Middle East.


From 1949, she performed at the Armenian Opera Theater in 23 operas during her long career, as well as performing at concerts. She also taught at Yerevan State Musical Conservatory.


Gasparyan was a People's Artist of the USSR, Socialist Work hero and Mesrop Mashtots order-bearer. She died in Yerevan on May 16, 2007.
