Contest for national theater construction announced

A contest for construction of a national theater at the proposed site has been announced, Chief Architect of Yerevan Narek Sargsyan told journalists on Friday.

However, no final decision has been made.

The proposed site in Mashtots Ave. caused discontent in civil society and among some architects.

“We expect bids from October 1, which will openly be discussed. If we see that large public areas are involved in project implementation, we will, of course, decline bids,” he said.

The Yerevan Municipality is interested in opening cultural centers in Armenia’s capital and encourages any initiative.

The construction of the Hrant Matevosyan and Komitas museums, as well as other cultural centers, is also on the agenda.
