Restoration of Tbilisi St. Gevorg church launches

The restoration works of the oldest church of Georgia’s capital Tbilisi St. Gevorg have already launched, coordinator of Armenian Assembly of Tbilisi Arnold Stepanyan told Tert.am.

He said the works are being carried out with the efforts of Armenians and Georgians.

“The church follows for its appearance to be preserved during the reconstruction works,” he said, adding that Armenian architects participated in the formation of restoration plan. Arnold Stepanyan said the church’s restoration works are funded by St Gevorg Restoration Charity Foundation.

“The sums are being gathered thanks to worldwide Armenians,” he said. The restoration works are expected to be completed in two years.

St Gevorg church was built in 1251 by an Armenian millionaire Karintsi Umek who settled in Tiflis in early 13th century.
The church was reconstructed in the 17th century.
