Yerakouyn.com, a new information-analytical website in the Western Armenian language, has been launched to enrich Armenia’s online media market on the 21st anniversary of independence.
Speaking to Tert.am, an editor of the website, Nayiri Mgrdichian, highly praised the initiative, noting that so far no independent news websites offering information only in Western Armenian have operated in either Armenia or the Diaspora.
“There are websites operating along with the print outlets, but we did not have an independent news site in the Western Armenian language,” she said.
Asked why they chose the name Yerakouyn, Mgrdichian answered: “The website was named Yerakouyn because Yerakouyn [the Armenian tricolor flag] was glorified by certain members of the Armenian Diaspora, becoming a national flag. We also believe that Yerakouyn, created by our three-member team, will become a favorite website for all Armenians.”
The idea to create Yeraukouyn was proposed by three authors, Khazhak Mgrdichian, Nayiri Mgrdichian and Narine Doumanian.
The demand for the website was great as a Diaspora Armenian reader often finds himself entangled while navigating through Western Armenian websites, Mgrdichian added.
“Instead of the Diaspora-Armenians, we now read the Eastern Armenian newspapers, choosing necessary materials and making them available in a language they understand best,” she said, adding that the site had as many as 19,000 visitors before its launch.
“There must naturally be independent materials as well, and we too write our own articles. But having two employees for now, we cannot manage everything. It will predominantly offer selected materials from all the media outlets, providing naturally the references,” Mgrdichian said, adding that increasing the staff will be possible in case of having more advertisers and sponsors.
