Russian military expert says re-armament of military base in Armenia to guarantee regional stability

Russia is reinforcing Armenia’s security to enable its strategic ally to resist the regional threats and hazards, a Russian military expert said, commenting on the country’s current efforts to re-equip its base in Armenia’s second largest city, Gyumri.

“The armament of the military base will give us confidence that there will be no security threat, and that any act of aggression will be reacted adequately, no matter the inciter,” Igor Korotchenko told Tert.am.
 

Citing Russia’s current strained relations with Turkey, he said he finds that country to be a real threat to Armenia’s security.

The expert said he is confident that the military base’s reinforcement is mutually beneficial for both Armenia and Russia.

But he ruled out any provocations by Turkey, describing the move as just an “insurance” measure.

Asked about possible plans to use the military base’s resources in Russia’s current military operations in Syria, Korotchenko ruled out such a development, saying that Russia has enough military force in the country to resolve possible challenges.
