Who's to Blame for Slang in TV? Characters? Criminals? Or …

“It would be ridiculous if the characters of soap operas with criminal content spoke in purest Armenian,” writer and Armenia’s former Deputy Minister of Culture Karine Khodikyan said at a press conference as she spoke about criminal characters and slang found in new soap operas.

“It is another thing if the TV should not have allowed that or other similar themes [to be used in films]. The point is what you prefer,” said Khodikyan.

In her words there would be a completely different situation should another language be used in those films or should the films be about other characters like teachers or lawyers or just about an “old Yerevan-based family.”

“Finally, let’s remember one thing: we have for centuries lived without state, crown,” said she, adding that the main reason Armenians survived was the language that unified them.
