Katy Perry's 'Firework' wins MTV Video Music Awards

Late Sunday night, Katy Perry took top prize at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards for her clip for inspirational ballad "Firework", NJ com reported.

It was Perry's second win of the night. She grabbed the moon man for her collaboration with Kanye West on "E.T.," one of five No. 1 singles from "Teenage Dream."

"Firework" was also nominated in the Best Video With a Message category, and, indeed, the clip is a heavy-handed one. In it, Perry inspires a leukemia patient, an overweight teenager, a victim of domestic abuse, and a shy gay man on the dance floor to set off their sparks within.

Although Perry had scored more nominations than any other artist, her win was said to be a slight upset. Adele's stark, haunting clip for "Rolling in the Deep" - which won for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing - was the favorite to take the top prize. Interestingly, "Firework" did not earn nominations in any of those categories, which ought to tell listeners what the MTV voters think of the value of art direction, cinematography, and editing. The Adele clip also lost Best Female Video to Lady Gaga's spectacular "Born This Way" and Best Pop Video to Britney Spears' glamorous "Til The World Ends."
