First monument to Russian warriors in Armenia to be completely renovated

The Hovhannes Imastaser Katoghikos Odznetsi charity has launched preparations for complete renovation of the monument of Russian warriors killed in the battle of Oshakan in 1827.

The charity leaders and the Ministry of Culture of Armenia signed a memorandum.

Armenia's Ministry of Culture will prepare and approve a draft renovation project and conduct an expert examination of the draft in conformity with Armenia's laws. The charity pledged to sponsor the project and hold contests. The winner companies will carry out the renovation work and conduct technical supervision.

"The Hovhannes Imastaser Katoghikos Odznetsi charity plans renovation of the first monument of Russian-Armenian-Russian military alliance on the occasion of the 185th anniversary of the battle of Oshakan," Armen Davtyan, Co-Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said.

On Aug. 17, 1827, near the village of Oshakan, Russian troops under the command of General Afanasiy Krasovskiy – with Armenian and Georgian volunteers – repulsed the Persian army's attacks and reached Echmiadzin. A monument to the killed Russian warriors was set up in commemoration of that battle in 1834.
