‘Real art is kind of absent reality convincing as much as reality itself’ – Artavazd Peleshyan

The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin will award its prize “Let there be light”, instituted for the Golden Apricot 10th international film festival, to the film director Artavazd Peleshyan for his contribution to world culture.
 
The 5th day of the film festival was dedicated to the master. His films ‘Inhabitants’, ‘Seasons’ ‘The end’ and ‘The life’ were screened, whereafter the master answered admirers’ questions.

Speaking of his films, Peleshyan said that he made when he was young. “I want young and had thick hair, but I had no comb. Now I have a comb, but I have no hair,” Peleshyan said humorously.

“Real art is when you free yourself from yourself. Real art is kind of absent reality convincing as much as reality itself,” he said.
Speaking of how he created his films, the master said, “I used to choose a situation and place and think that the place would make people act how I wanted them to. It proved to be so.”

Asked if he creates Armenian films, Peleshyan said, “What does Armenian cinema mean?”

Asked about his films “without words,” the master said that “there was no need for words. But words are most important. I did not use words because words require sequence of images. Sounds, images, music speak stronger than words,” he said.

With respect to his intention to return to Armenia, he said, “May be, let us see.”
