French-Armenian artist Jean Jansem passes away

The acclaimed French-Armenian painter, Jean Jansem (Hovhannes Semerjian), has died in a Paris suburb at age 93.

His death was reported to the Armenian Embassy to France by the family, reports ITAR-TASS.

Jansem was born in Turkey in 1920. Two years later, the family moved to Greece. After his father’s death in 1931, he went to France and spent the rest of his life in Isi-le-Mulino, a town on the outskirts of Paris.

In 2002, Jansem donated to the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute canvasses portraying tragedy scenes. Later in the year, he was elected a foreign member of Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences and was honored with the Mesrop Mashtots order.

In 2010, the artist received an honor award as a present for his 90th birth anniversary, as well as for his contribution to the strengthening of the Armenian-French cultural ties.
