Godzilla King of Monsters marks 60th anniversary

Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot arrives in 2014, which is also the year that the legendary lizard celebrates its 60th birthday, www.cineworld.co.uk reports.

To mark this cinematic milestone, we take a look back at some of the most noteworthy films to have featured the mighty Kaiju.

Since first appearing in 1954, Godzilla has become a Japanese pop culture icon, spawning 27 sequels, books, comics, video games and much more besides. Interestingly, the Japanese Godzilla series is broadly defined by three eras - Showa (1954 to 1975), Heisei (1984 to 1995) and Millenium (1999 to 2004), each of which have seen different sensibilities being imposed on the Godzilla mythology.
