Armenian monastery on Europa Nostra’s ‘Most Endangered’ list

The St Gregory monastery of Bardzrakash (Lori region) has appeared on Europe’s seven most endangered  monuments' list, reports the Ministry of Culture.

The list, published jointly by Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank, comprises eleven monuments and sights. The findings are reported to be preliminary.

Europa Nostra launched its “7 Most Endangered” project in 2012 with an aim of uniting public and private organizations around the idea of preserving cultural heritage.

In 2013 Armenia applied for the program with a bid for the preservation of the St Paul-Peter church (Aragatrostn region). The construction was included on a preliminary list of monuments from 12 participating states. But the final “7 Most Endangered List” contained another historical Armenian place of warship – the St Gregory church of Mardin (Western Armenia) - which is now in Turkey.

After the selection of the final list, a team of experts from Europa Nosta visits all the sites for conducting studies with the local specialists and elaborating projects aimed at the monuments’ preservation.
