Armenian sculptor Ara Shiraz dies at 73

Armenian sculptor Ara Shiraz died Monday morning in Yerevan’s Nayiri Medical Center, Tert.am has learned from a hospital source.

He was 73. The hospital’s medical director, Lusine Aghababyan. told our correspondent that the sculptor suffered from acute arrest of cerebral circulation.

Ara Shiraz (Aramazd Hovhannisyan) was the son of the great Armenian poet Hovhannes Shiraz (1914-1984) and poetess Silva Kaputikyan (1919-2006).

A graduate of the Yerevan Theatrical Institute, he was the president of the Artists’ Union of Armenia (1987-1993). Shiraz is the author of numerous statues, busts, and monumental and monumental-decorative pieces of sculpture.
