Armenian poet Hamo Sahyan’s native home rebuilt; no monument erected in Yerevan

Yesterday marked the 100th birthday anniversary of the great Armenian poet Hamo Sahyan. On that occasion the writer’s son and the president of the Hamo Sahyan Scientific-Cultural Center held on Tuesday a news conference to remember his literary heritage.

Both expressed regret that that 2014 was not declared a year dedicated to the poet.

“Unlike the previous years, certain problems finally found a solution this year, but it is very regrettable that the government did not declare the year as the year of Sahyan. We are very happy that the house in his native village (Lor, Syunik region – ed.) was rebuilt, but a monument is yet to be erected in Yerevan,” said Sos Davtyan, the center’s director.

The poet’s son, Nayiri Sahyan, added for his part the Yerevan mayor has promised to announce a bid for a monument project in the near future.

“For me, the erection of a monument in the capital is important now; that will awaken interest in children and students who will start reading the poet,” he said.

“I say it not just as a son, but as an Armenian. I resided in the United States and came to Armenia in 2011. Coming to my home country, I knew I would experience lots of difficulties. It is now two and a half years I strive for the opening of Sahyan’s home museum and the erection of a plaque and a monument. And it was this year that we finally managed to have a little progress,” he added.
