Monument to Anastas Mikoyan in Armenia’s capital: idea suggested by descendants

A monument to Anastas Mikoyan is a public order, Artur Gevorgyan, Head of the Public Relations Department, Yerevan Municipality, told Tert.am.

Asked if Yerevan’s chief architect followed this principle when he proposed setting up a monument to Anastas Mikoyan, Gevorgyan said:

“Naming a street, fixing a commemorative plague or setting up a bust or a monument – all this is done to meet certain public circles’ demands.”

Among they are the Union of Veterans, Communist Party of Armenia, socialist parties, Moscow Municipality, Russian leadership. However, none of the aforementioned entities has placed the order.

“Mikoyan’s descendants in Russia and in Europe got in touch with Yerevan’s chief architect and expressed their wish for a monument to him in Yerevan,” Gevorgyan said.

If a relevant decision is made, it will be a replica of the monument to Anastas Mikoyan in Sanain (a settlement in Armenia where he was born). However, is the public offers convincing argument that he was a traitor, the Yerevan Municipality may revise its decision.
