Musicians attract less interest than sportsmen in Armenia – Composers’ Union chief

Sportsmen with little success enjoy more popularity in Armenia than do gifted musicians, the president of the Composers’ Union has said, expressing his concerns of the society’s ignorance of talented musicians’ success.

“There is an information vacuum in Armenia, with no one talking of composers’ success,” Aram Satyan told reporters on Friday.

He said the Union recently managed to implement structural reforms in addition to its concert programs which included three festivals.

“This is an enormous volume, especially when we talk of composers, as well as of children, because we also had a young composers’ contest dedicated to Edward Mirzoyan,” he said.

Satyan added that their upcoming festival of Armenian composers’ works will attract representatives from such internationally-acclaimed recording companies as SONY, SIKORSKI etc.

“The cooperation is in progress, with a considerable amount of Armenian composers’ work being in the process of printing and preparation. Why do we need this? We must have our participation and win, for example, a Grammy award, because neither the Union of Composers nor even the Ministry [of Culture] can get involved in the processes. It has to be introduced to companies which can submit those recordings,” he said.
