Michele and Barack Obama fondly recount story of first date

Monday marks the 25th anniversary of Spike Lee’s breakout film Do the Right Thing.

Before a special screening of the film at LACMA last Friday, this short video featuring the president and the first lady aired.

In it, Michelle and Barack Obama explain how Lee’s film played an instrumental role in the beginning of their relationship. The president started, “We had eaten lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, gone for a little walk and then I took her to this new movie everybody was talking about, directed by a guy that not that many people had heard of.” Michelle interjected,

“He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker.” The Obamas go on to praise the film and the president concludes,

The whole video is not only a loving ode to Lee and the enduring legacy of his film, but a delightful insight into the lives of a young Michelle and Barack. Like most of their loving public interactions, this is said to read as entirely sincere. All that’s missing is the flowered wallpaper and a plunky, jazz standard-filled soundtrack.
