Canadian Prime Minister to join European leaders in Armenia for summit under theme “Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe”

Next week, along with European leaders, the Prime Minister of Canada will also visit Armenia to participate in the European Political Community summit, according to the European Commission’s website. Mark Carney will be the first non-European leader to attend this format as a guest since its establishment.

According to the official statement, the summit will be held under the slogan “Building the Future: Unity and Resilience in Europe.”

“Discussions in Yerevan will focus on strengthening democratic resilience, developing connectivity, and enhancing economic and energy security. Participants will discuss how, through closer cooperation and coordinated actions, they can contribute to creating a more resilient, secure, and unified European space,” the European Commission stated.

The summit has invited all 27 EU member states, as well as partner countries, including Azerbaijan and Turkey. Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan stated last week that, so far, neither Baku nor Ankara has responded to Yerevan’s invitations.

Meetings of the European Political Community began in 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. They are held twice a year in both EU and non-EU countries to strengthen security, stability, and prosperity across Europe and to discuss issues of mutual interest. Previous summits have been hosted by the Czech Republic, Moldova, and Albania. The next one after Yerevan will take place in Ireland in November this year.
