Armenian Lavash on UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is holding its 9th session at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, Nov. 24 to 28, 2014.

At its Nov 26 meeting, the Committee decided to inscribe Armenia’s nomination ‘Lavash, the preparation, meaning and appearance of traditional bread as an expression of culture in Armenia’ on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Lavash is a traditional thin bread that forms an integral part of Armenian cuisine. Its preparation is typically undertaken by a small group of women, and requires great effort, coordination, experience and special skills.
