‘50 Shades of Grey’ ticket sales skyrocketing

“Fifty Shades of Grey” doesn’t come out for two more weeks, but it has already been breaking ticket sales records, the Washington Post reports, citing  Fandango, the online movie entertainment and ticket seller.

The erotic-kink-romance film, based on the megaselling book trilogy, doesn’t begin showing until Feb. 13, but it has been “Fandango’s fastest-selling R-rated title in our 15-year history,” the company said Thursday.
Sales for “Fifty Shades,” as well as “American Sniper,” have helped make this January the best-selling month since November 2013 — higher than any month in 2014, Fandango said.

Both “American Sniper” and “Fifty Shades” are “doing so well that 2015 is off to a great start,” the company added.

Fandango also is selling gift cards for “Fifty Shades” that come in denominations of between $15 and $100. One version of the card permits someone to put their picture next to the words “Mr. Grey will see you now.”

The movie plot revolves around wealthy businessman Christian Grey and his young new love, Anastasia Steele, whom he introduces to his private world of sadomasochistic sex.
