Armenian Genocide memorial unveiled in Paris

A memorial dedicated to women victims of the Armenian Genocide was unveiled in Paris on Sunday as part of the events commemorating the big tragedy’s centennial.

The ceremony was led by Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and Armenian Ambassador to France Vigen Chitechian. The sculpture is erected next to the statue of Komitas in the city’s Yerevan Park.  Also on the occasion of the International Women’s Day and in commemoration of the Armenian women killed during the massacres, one hundred rose bushes were planted in the park, reports the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s press service.

The event was attended by members of the Paris City Council, politicians, public figures and officials, representatives of cultural and media circles, hundreds of French-Armenians and other residents of Paris.

In his remarks, Ambassador Chitechian thanked both the Paris city authorities and the government of France for underlined caretaking attitude and permanent attention to the ancestors of the country’s ethnic Armenian citizens.

The memorial bears an inscription which reads, “In commemoration of the women victims of the Armenian Genocide, thos who disappeared without a trace, as well as those who survived and conveyed the memory.”
