An Armenian sculptor has won a contest for building a Moscow monument dedicated to victims of reprisal.
Georgy Frangulyan will design the statue to be erected in the central part of Russia’s capital, says a statement on the artist’s website.
Frangulyan is the author of monuments to first President of the Russia Boris Yeltsin (Yekaterinburg) and writer Bulat Okujaeva (Moscow).
He submitted his work, “Wall of Grief”, for the recent contest. The sculpture is a as-relief with human figures symbolizing both the dead and those living.
An online fundraising has been launched to get the project underway. The organizers plan to have the statue erected in October 2016.
The initiative was proposed by Russian human rights organizations. President Vladimir Putin has approved the plan.
