Justine Bieber beats Beatles record
The Fab Four may have been outlived by their chart record – but it took a 21-year-old Canadian to break it, reports The Telegraph.
Justin Bieber has 17 songs on the December 5 Hot 100 chart, beating The Beatles's 14, which has been the most by any one artist since April 11, 1964. The Beatles’ record had been equalled by rapper Drake in March and again in October, but Bieber is the first artist to topple the legendary band as record holders.
The Beatles aren’t the only British supergroup to have been overtaken by Bieber this week. One Direction's fifth, an dpotentially final, album,Made in the AM, was beaten to the top spot by Bieber's new record, Purpose, which debuted at number on eon the Billboard 200.
Of the 18 songs on the deluxe edition of Purpose, 17 singles have entered the chart – with the majority of the new entries being driven by online streaming.
The record breaking feat was boosted the release of videos for each song on Bieber's album. The only song from the album to not enter the charts is album closer All In It.
The Beatles held the record for the most songs on the Hot 100 in a single week for more than 50 years. In April 1964, the height of Beatlemania, the group's 14 singles were led by Can’t Buy Me Love and Twist and Shout at number 1 and 2, respectively. That same year, the Beatles had five singles in the top five – a feat that no artist has matched since.
