David Bowie fans sign petition to stop Kanye West recording rumoured covers album

He's claimed to be the voice of a generation. And it seems that Kanye West is planning to add his own spin to David Bowie's mythical material as it's rumoured he's planning to cover the icons songs for a new album.

However fans of the late musical icon have started a petition to stop the 38-year-old from going near the material, saying any cover by Yeezy would amount to 'sacrilege', the Daily Mail reported.

The online petition was posted following a report that the Stronger rapper was heading into the studio to put his own unique spin on some of David's greatest hits - in honour of his passing.

Speaking to the Daily Star, an insider divulged details of the project, saying: 'He is determined to carry on David's work as a musical innovator. He says that the torch has been passed to him


The source also described how Kim Kardashian's husband was planning to arrange the album, stating: "Some [tracks] are straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing."

Before adding a hint of controversy to the rumour by stating: 'On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie's music.'

And while Kanye joined legions of the singer's fans around the world in paying tribute to the late man following the news of his death earlier this month, other devotees of the Ziggy Stardust star are less than pleased with the news.

Taking to Twitter, the College Dropout wrote: 'David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime.' 

As the news broke of the purported covers album one Bowie fan channelled his ire, and took to petition site 38degrees.

Accusing Kanye of attempting to 'ruin' David's music, Peter Piranha wrote he was creating the petition to 'stop Kanye West from being allowed to record covers of David Bowie's music'.

Explaining his reasons for starting the online campaign, he wrote: 'David Bowie was one of the
single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West.'

After just 24 hours the petition had registered 3,639 votes in favour of blocking the rumoured record.
