The ancient site of Ani, historically known as the city of one thousand and one churches, needs further research that could shed light on the other side of the one-time Armenian capital, claims a Turkish historian.

Vedat Akcayoz, who is in the team of researchers wishing to give the place the UNSESCO World Cultural Heritage status, has conducted his studies for 15 years to realize the plan, Agos reports. “Having worked on the project for so many years, I have come to realize that only 35% of the Ani ruins have been studied to date. The district Degirmenler has not largely been uncovered yet. We have submitted my documentary film and the records to the Kars Art Center and UNESCO officials,” he said.

The historian also pointed to the shortage of means, saying that the Turkish Government gave them only 2,000 Liras instead of the expected 1,4000 (2.87432 Turkish Liras = 1 US Dollars).

“The 26 churches in the vicinities of Ani, as well as the city itself, have a completely different side. We do believe in that and want to shed light on it. UNESCO too, has found the project rather valuable and offered its support. With the video camera in my hand, I do really wish, as an amateur, to be vocal about this piece of heritage,” he added.
