The Mesrop Mashtots Scientific Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran) on Tuesday elected a director at the meeting of its board of trustees.

Doctor Vahan Ter-Ghevondyan, the acting director, received the board members' unanimous support in a voting conducted in a secret ballot. He was the only candidate who had submitted an application to run the institution in the coming five years.

A scholar of Armenian and Arab studies, Ter-Ghevondyan worked at the National Academy of Sciences between 1986-1991 (specializing in the history of Middle Ages). From 1991 until 1993, he was an aide to the President of Armenia. Ter-Ghevondyan also worked in the diplomatic corps, serving as Charge d'Afffairs of Armenia in France (1993-1995) and the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil (1995-1998), and the Republic of Lebanon (2006-2008).

Since 2014, Ter-Ghevondyan worked at the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, becoming its acting director in 2016 (after the death of Hrachya Tamrazyan, the former director).
