Aznavour’s son shares story of father’s assistance to Armenia after 1988 quake (photos)
Charles Aznavour’s son has shared memories of the legendary singer's generous assistance to Armenia after the 1988 devastating earthquake.
Nicolas Aznavour was a special guest at the commemorative event Chrononicles of Charity - dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the big disaster. He remembered how his father mobilized the world upon hearing the sad news of the tragedy (which claimed 25,000 lives and left hundreds homeless in Gyumri, Spitak and other cities and towns of Armenia).
“My father was among the first to react to the 1988 disaster and take immediate action. That very night, he composed the song Pour toi Armenie (For You Armenia) together with Georges Garvarents, mobilizing artists from France, United States, and later also the entire international community,” he said.
As a crucial factor promoting human development, the legendary crooner's son also appreciated the ability to consolidate people and empathize with them at critical moments.
The meeting, held on November 28, was organized by the Armenian Embassy in Moscow in collaboration with Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and Aznavour Foundation, according a statement on the Embassy's Facebook page.
The world-renowned French-Armenian singer, lyricist and public activist died on October 1 in Paris aged 94.
In June 2017, Aznavour’s House Museum opened in Yerevan in a ceremony attended by the great musician, his son and numerous other guests.
