Brazilian secretary of culture resigns amid LGBT row
The Brazilian Secretary of Culture, Henrique Pires, confirmed Thursday that he resigned and that the Minister of Citizenship, Osmar Terra, was no longer a democratic man and is now aligned with censorship.
Pires announced Wednesday that he had resigned his post because he did not agree with Jair Bolsonaro's censorship of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) audiovisual productions, according to Prensa Latina.
Terra "was an extremely democratic man, but turned the switch” and is now “in keeping with the censorship” on the Bolsonaro administration's part, he reiterated.
The two have been working together since 2016, when Pires headed the office of the Ministry of Social Development (MDS), led by Terra, under the Michel Temer government.
After his resignation, the now former secretary received an invitation from Terra to preside over a foundation in Rio de Janeiro, but rejected it.
