In the early hours of Saturday morning, a former Army helicopter pilot will climb on board a cramped Soyuz space capsule to begin his journey back to Earth. While preparing for his return to Earth, the British spaceman has managed to find the time to take a few final snaps of the stunning Northern Lights from his viewpoint 249 miles above the Earth
There are two types of Aurora - Aurora Borealis, which means 'dawn of the north', and Aurora Australis, 'dawn of the south.' In this image, part of the ISS can be seen against the stunning backdrop of an aurora Australia when closing the shutters
The 44-year-old was the first British astronaut to go into orbit since Helen Sharman blasted off to the Russian Mir Space Station in 1991. Aurora over Denmark (bottom) with Norway (above) and Sweden (right). The lights are created when charged particles from the sun enter Earth's atmosphere
When Peake returns to Earth on June 18, Russian rescue crews will be on hand to assist the astronauts as they attempt to climb out of the Soyuz space capsule. After six months in orbit their muscles will be greatly weakened and they wills struggle initially to adjust to the Earth's gravity
Most people on Earth are lucky if they get to see the aurora - also called the Northern Lights (pictured above western Canada), or the Southern Lights, once in their lifetime. The picture above shows the kind of stunning displays they can produce, but from the ISS astronauts are treated to a unique perspective
Usually the particles are deflected by the Earth's magnetic field, but some enter the atmosphere and collide with gas particles. The ISS orbits at around 248 miles above the Earth's surface at more than 17,000mph, meaning it orbits the planet once every 92 minutes. This gives the astronauts an unrivalled view of the planet and how it interacts with the space around it
The aurora, which are usually called the northern and southern lights because they occur close to the poles, are the effect of energetic particles from the solar wind colliding with the gas in the atmosphere
Circling the globe more than 2,800 times, Major Peake is one of the few who can live up to the claims of Johnny Cash, saying he really has been ¿ or at least seen ¿ everywhere, and his photo scrapbook proves it.
Nasa said studying the aurora from space could provide scientists with details about the behaviour of the sun.
