The SPECULOOS Southern Observatory (SSO) is at the core of the exoplanet-hunting project and these are the initial engineering and calibration images â a process known as first light. This imageÂ shows the famous Horsehead Nebula

The SSO project consists of four telescopes (pictured) equipped with three-foot (one metre) primary mirrors. The telescopes â named Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto after the four Galilean moons of Jupiter â are at the same plae as ESO's flagship Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Paranal

SPECULOOS will search for exoplanets using the transit method. As a planet passes in front of its star it blocks some of the star's light â essentially causing a small partial eclipse â resulting in a subtle but detectable dimming of the star
