A 17th century Caravaggio painting stolen from Sicily more than fifty years ago has been recreated using advanced technologies. Factum Arte's restorer Adam Lowe (pictured, in front of the finished replica) relied on old pictures and scanning techniques to conjure up an exact reproduction of the painting

Model and result: To create the replica the studio had to rely on a four-by-five-inches colour shot taken by photographer Enzo Brai in 1968 (pictured). The photo file was scaled up to the painting's size - nine-by-six foot (or 2 by 2.5 mt) - but obviously it still looked like an enlarged, fading image of the Italian artist's masterpiece

While the studio had already produced facsimiles of Caravaggio paintings on other occasions, this project was much more challenging as there was no original

To breathe life into the reproduction, the restorers looked at high-definition scans of other Caravaggio paintings the studio had taken in 2009. In this way, Factum Arte could digitally recreate some key elements of Caravaggio's technique and overlap them on the Nativity's replica (pictured, a phase of this process)
